Johanni Fires

Fires to celebrate midsummer´s day - on June 23

The summer solstice is celebrated when the sun reaches its highest point in the summer.

On the eve of this day (June 23), which is called "Johannitag" in German after Saint Johannes, whose name day is on this day, bonfires are lit on mountain tops and hills throughout the Werdenfelser region.

The Johanni fires in Grainau on June 23 are especially impressive, because the entire Waxenstein ridge is crowned by a chain of glowing fires after the sky has darkened, all lit up by brave local mountaineers. No matter what the weather conditions are like, they climb up the mountain on narrow paths, occasionally even have to scale cliffs, until they reach the lofty ridge.

Carnival in Grainau

The "Grainauer Fosenacht" - that means original carnival tradition

For centuries we find the "Fosenacht" throughout the Bavarian region nowhere so vivid and original as in the "Werdenfelser Land".

In our rural areas the forms of expressions of the carnival has a lot of old and obtained customs. Each of the "Maschkera" carries a wood carved "Larve", which is often in family ownership for decades, even centuries. These rigid, stylized wooden faces have a very peculiar charm.

The carnival in Grainau is therefore an experience for young and old - and of course, to watch and join in the celebrations! Do you want to come to our "Fosenacht" (carnival in local dialect)?
