King's House on Schachen
... the mountain escape
Ludwig II had this mountain lodge built at an altitude of 1866 m in one of Bavaria’s most spectacular alpine settings, in front of the imposing north face of the Wetterstein. In stark contrast to its unassuming façade and the ground floor, the upper floor reveals highly ornate oriental splendor. The king enjoyed celebrating his birthday in the Turkish Hall, probably the only secluded mountain hide-away equipped with divans and a fountain. Schachen is only accessible by foot coming from Elmau (3 hours) or Garmisch-Partenkirchen (4 hours).
